In creating this website, I learned a bunch of new things, which are always exciting for me. One of the reasons I love website design is that I’m constantly learning new things. There’s always new surprises (good and bad) and it can be like a puzzle in trying to figure out what is the right piece and right way to move forward. We MoveD From Squarespace to wordpress
With their first website, we started with Squarespace to make the process of updating their website content much more user friendly. While WordPress has a lot of bells and whistles, Squarespace beats this platform with its user-friendly capabilities on its backend. It also makes it easier for site optimization and you don’t have to worry about those pesky plugin updates WordPress has all the time that could potentially crash for your website.
However, Squarespace has many limitations of their own, one being lacking unique design capabilities. Rob & Steve also came to me with wanting to implement an online course option where customers can purchase the course, and then access the curriculum right from the website. With some added work and research, I came to the conclusion that WordPress was the best way to go forward with their next website and adding this online course aspect.
Added Online courses via learnpress
This was a new experience for me! I have participated in online classes before, but had never designed or coded them. So, this process was a learning curve. I used LearnPress as the platform for the online course, and the process, for the most part, was pretty straightforward.
I did run into issues with automated emails. The design capabilities of this is HORRIBLE. Also, testing these emails is an absolute pain because you have to actually make a purchase to even see the changes you made in the backend. I also had some issues with trying to use PayPal as the payment gateway. While the purchase did go through, the customer would not receive their email giving them their new login information to access the class. The loop around for this was to get rid of PayPal, and I chose WooCommerce’s payment gateway plugin for LearnPress. This did fix that issue.
customizing woocommerce checkout process
I had heard that WooCommerce was quite a beast to tackle. I didn’t even dive too deep into this platform, given that I only needed to use its payment gateway. However, customizing the checkout process so that it actually looked “pretty” and fit with the branding of the website was a very long a tedious process. I dug through lots of blogs of other people struggling with this same issue, and I honestly got lucky with some CSS manipulation.
Overall take away- i love it!
This design is one I’m incredibly proud of. It’s engaging, and feels so much like Rob & Steve, which is the ultimate point when designing for a client. You want the design to reflect and tell the story of the brand, which it does just that.
Let me know your thoughts and if you ran into any issues with WooCommerce and LearnPress as well! Maybe we can help each other out! And if you are in need of some spiritual healing, do hit up Rob & Steve!
